How Barry Switzer Changed College Football

Writer's picture: Harry TaylorHarry Taylor

44 years ago the HUGE Power move was made by my Sooners. Barry Switzer replaced Chuck Fairbanks when he left for the NFL.

Sooner Fans are everywhere From East to the West Coast. The OUtspoken King understood this and in the 1980 finally got a lot of people talking about an unique idea. The idea was watching College football on TV.

1979 was the year ESPN was brought into existence. Once This happened Switzer saw the idea to get those Sooners OUtside the state to see or hear about Sooner Football. This is because remember there was no internet to keep an eye on your team. So the only way was through the radio. But wait you had to be in radio range. There was no TuneIn app at this time. So before 1979 with ESPN the local news was the only way to keep an eye on your team. LOCAL News is the key to the last sentence.

Thanks to Switzer giving his two cents on watching College football look where we are 44 years later. Just look what the ESPN Family have no-(ESPN/ESPN News/ESPN U and ABC). Thats (4) chances to watch your college team. This however as you can see does NOT include OUr Rial Texas and the LHN.
